Possible Conditions

Coughing with Swallowing

Coughing with swallowing occurs when any liquid or solids enters the airway during swallowing. This is often referred to as aspiration.

Causes can range from problems in the epiglottis, voice box or larynx, coordination of muscles and nerves involved in swallowing, etc. This can be a minor issue, but could also develop into a more serious (even emergent) problem. Patients suffering from coughing with swallowing should consult an ENT.

Any and all airway problems require immediate attention.
