Possible Conditions

Lump Sensation in Throat

A feeling of a "lump in the throat" can have several causes. Best practice recommends that patients with this lump sensation in the throat see or consult with their physician. Other terms for this sensation include "globus pharyngeus," "globus symptom," and "pseudodysphagia."

Some of the causes are listed below.

  • Reflux laryngitis
  • Vocal fold granuloma
  • Foreign body in the throat/voice box area
  • Cancer in the head and/or neck area
  • Tonsillar polyp (mass in the tonsils)
  • Cervical osteophytes (abnormal bony outgrowths in the cervical spine)
